“American Beauty”

This man found respite from the heat of summer on a shaded porch. Everything about this guy spoke to me, and I really loved his style.

“Cool Kat”

Two years ago, I painted “Walking Tall,”  a portrait which included this man as my model. I approached him at a different angle in this painting, but his visage still holds the same fascination for me. It is interesting to me to see how much the application and intensity of my hues has evolved since his eariler portrait. Now, like then, the shadows draw me in.

“Guitar Player”

The challenge for me here was to convey the intimate relationship that exists between the musician and his instrument. I chose to focus on his torso, hands, and the guitar, and purposely did not paint his visage. Music and art are acts of creation, and I very much admired this artist in his endeavor. I felt inspired by his songs.

“Inside Joke”

I love painting skin tones and hair, but I particularly enjoy painting African-American portraits. There are so many rich nuances of hue and shade that make the process a joy to discover.

“Young Boy of Pakistan”

Many thanks to my work colleague and most excellent photographer, Nadeem Ahsan, MD, for sharing this photo with me and permitting me to create a painting. Dr. Ahsan visited Pakistan not long ago, and captured so many beautiful and haunting shots of a country that I don’t know whether I will ever have the opportunity to visit. One particular photograph really fascinated me – the expression on this young boy’s face is compelling, and invites me to linger.

“One Evening”

Inspired by an old sepia family photo, I imagined her going to a ball. The gaze in her eyes was enhanced by her soft skin and almost Greek, statuesque profile. She came to life with my pigments, and I worked on the background to make her pop a little more.

“White Bonnet”

Inspiration from an old sepia/gray family photo. The colors and pigments I used to execute this portrait – quite arbitrary. I had fun with adding some lost and found edges. The lighting, from front and above, added challenges but also opportunities to add interest.

“Asleep in Edinburgh”

We visited Scotland last year, and this man sleeping on a bench in Edinburgh embodied for me a balance of softness and roughness that I could easily visualize in a painting. He was a perfect model, as I sketched him while he slept. I took several photos to bring back with me to the studio, because I really wanted to capture the light, which fell on him like a blanket.
