“Veterans Day”
I just love painting old people. Their stories are expressed in every line and wrinkle. This gentleman allowed me to photograph him during a Veterans Day parade, and a black-and-white snapshot became my reference. I added my own hues and colors, trying to allow a weathered feeling and a sense of time and personal history to come through.

Terry, to me this is your most outstanding and poignant of all – it’s a winner for sure- LOVE it!
Thank you, Joani. He really spoke to me – felt like I got to know him as I painted.
I know exactly what you mean and it’s very obvious in the work. Did you pick him out of a crowd – I assume you didn’t know him before. Amazing story telling!
He was kind of off by himself, apart from the crowd, so he was an easy “target,” although I asked him if I could take his pic. 🙂
Hope he’ll get to see it, but I guess you probably have no contact info, but, boy would his family cherish it!
I don’t think I’ll see him; he wasn’t that interested in me, and I didn’t want to impact on his special day, you know? But you’re right – it would be great to show it to him!
Oh, well, it’s the kind of thing that would do so well in a show – hope you’ll enter it!
I also have to say that the detail really told volumes!
It was a fine line, Joani. I didn’t want to take too much away from him, but since the portrait is all face and not much figure, I wanted to infuse him with interest.
To me, those little things, like the hearing aid just made it and added to his story, but I get what you’re saying – no problem here, though,
Thanks. I appreciate your feedback so much.
No pun intended!
Lol!
Beautiful work Terry your palette so well chosen and then of course your expert hand putting it all in the right place.
Thanks for such a lovely thing to say, Lorraine.
Wow, this piece is really special Terry. So much meaning, story, and I also love that profile! Your colors are always wonderful too.
Thank you much, Sherry. I’m pleased with his colors, and I tried to use them freely.
