“In the Eyes of the Morning Sun”

I snapped off several photos of this man, but this one grabbed me – he looked directly at me. I generally prefer that my candid shots capture a less posed look, but his smile and expression were so fresh, and in the moment. The sunlight helped create shadows that also lent a certain movement, and a consideration of who he is. I arranged my pigments playfully, to bring his personality in to play.

Another beautiful portrait, Terry! Teeth aren’t easy for one thing, but they look very natural in your painting.

Been meaning to comment for a few days! Love his quizzical look! Nice contrasts. especially where the sun hits his face! SO nice! I was wondering, when you take pics like this, do you go up and ask if you can paint them or not?

As a rule, no I do not, Wyna. I take my photos at large gatherings, usually where there are many other people taking photos, too (like fairs, racetracks, performances). The original photo was of a larger group of people – I just focused on him out when it came time to paint. I actually didn’t single him out to paint – it was only after I reviewed my photos that I found I liked his expressive face.
