“Sassafras”
I was immediately attracted to the idea of painting this woman. She was full of ambiguity. Her face was assertive, but had a subtle edge. The turn of her head, her sunglasses, and the interplay of light and shadow all seemed to make me wonder about her even more. I originally had painted a busy, light background behind her, but played around with darkening it instead, which seemed to help highlight her expression and mood.
