“Cloaked in a Grey Morning”
In painting this portrait, I found this woman’s gaze piercing, and unsettling. By keeping her clothes and background grey and fairly neutral, I allowed myself to animate her face with color and intensity. Inspiration came from an old family photo of my grandmother as a child, sitting with her mother and grandmother – so that makes this woman my great-great grandmother.

This is really an intriguing portrait. She invites questions of where she was born; what she has seen in her life.
I know – her face is so expressive. Thanks, Anne.
Such an expressive piece Terry. Her eyes are wonderful…love the color you’ve added there.
Thanks, Sherry. I love using arbitrary colors – sometimes it catches mood really well.
A very compelling portrait Terry, the snippet of story you tell matches up with what the viewer sees perfectly
Thanks for that feedback, Lorraine!
