Antonio, as I named him, was standing with his daughters under a gazebo on the hottest day of the summer when I took their snapshot. I isolated him from my black and white photograph because his gaze captured my interest and told a story. Using color to create harmony and a warm dynamic, I set about to obtain a glimpse into his character. Painting on hot press paper allowed me to mix my pigments and add layers in fresh ways, and I used many soft edges to complete the mood. I am proud to announce that this painting won this year’s Mildred Sands Kratz Award for Excellence in Realism at the Pennsylvania Watercolor Society’s 33rd Annual International Juried Exhibition. The exhibition ran from November, 2012 – February, 2013. It is also exhibiting at the Phillips Mill 84th Juried Art Exhibit, 2013.
