“Mae the Flapper”
Sometimes we get lucky and are offered a special glimpse into a bygone era. The sepia photo of Mae that inspired this painting was taken when she was a young woman, during that very stylized time of the 1920s. I just love how her close-fitting cloche hat and generous, flamboyant stole framed her face. As I painted her, I realized that her accoutrements epitomized the spiritedness and directness of the woman I knew and loved as my great aunt.
